‘Terroir’, or a sense of where precisely a wine comes from, is the fundamental principle at the heart of Burgundy. This dinner, comprising nine wines (three white and six red), will explore what makes Burgundy tick. The whites will feature wines from the three famous communes south of Beaune – Puligny, Chassagne and Meursault, from the same vintage (2004), all from different producers. The first red flight will be three consecutive vintages – 2001, 2002 and 2003 of the Nuits-Saint-Georges 1er cru, Clos-des-Forêts-Saint-Georges, made by Domaine de l’Arlot, and will show how the weather affects the character of a wine. The second flight will be three vintages of the famous grand cru Clos Vougeot from three separate growers: 1998 from Frédéric Esmonin, 2003 from Hudelot-Noëllat and 2006 from Domaine Faiveley. It will show not only the different vintage characters, but also how each grower ‘interprets’ the character of the vineyard.
